Website Design Checklist

 

Purpose

  • Is the stance clear? Does your site grab the user’s attention in 5 seconds or less?   
  • Will the audience understand your site’s purpose? Examples include a clear call to action, description of project, and/or image gallery.
  • Is the site URL related to the project’s purpose and easy to remember?  
     

Navigation 

  • Overall site: Is it easy to move around the site? More specifically, is it easy to move between pages and sections? If this could be improved, make suggestions.  
  • Sections on a page: Is it easy to move around each section and navigate to other sections or pages using links or buttons?  
  • Navigation menu and its counterparts (back or next buttons): Is the menu clear, or does it need to be simplified/re-organized?  
     

Order

  • Visual Hierarchy: 
    • Is the order of importance (e.g., headlines, sub headlines, photos) clear within the overall design? 
    • Does the designer clearly indicate how we should move around the page or section?  
       

Visual and Multimedia Elements (images, photos, videos) 

  • Are all visuals and multimedia connected to the topic? Do stock photos serve a purpose besides being visually pleasing? 
  • Arrangement/Alignment: Where are visual or multimedia elements placed? Are they arranged neatly and in places that complement the elements around them?
  • Accessibility: Do images have simple alt text for screen readers? 
  • Quality: Are images and multimedia high quality (no pixelation) as well as easy to see/open?

 

Written Elements (headlines, sub headlines, body text)

  • Font: Are the font choices deliberate, easy to read, and consistent (e.g., Headline and body text)
  • Size and scale: Is it easy to distinguish between different kinds of written elements? Is each written portion easy to read?
  • Alignment: Like images, is text properly aligned? 
     

Color 

  • Do the colors fit the project’s purpose? 
  • Color theme: Is there a cohesive, purposeful color theme across the project? 
  • Contrast: Are the colors easy to read across the project?
