Environment: Study Spots

Optimizing Your Writing Environment

Where you study affects how well you study. Choosing a spot based on your specific writing task—rather than just habit—is the key to a productive session.

Low-Stakes Tasks

Best for: Coffee shops, Union lounges, Landis Green

  • Brainstorming & Freewriting
  • Initial source discovery
  • Building rough outlines

High-Stakes Tasks

Best for: Quiet floors, Private study rooms

  • Deep drafting & complex arguments
  • Revising for logic and structure
  • Proofreading and final editing

Why Environment Matters

Where you study affects how well you study, and the relationship is not random. Noise level, seating comfort, access to power outlets, and even lighting all have real effects on how long you can sustain focus and how much you retain. But the bigger factor that students tend to overlook is fit between environment and task. The kind of focus required to freewrite or brainstorm is different from the kind required to work through a difficult source or tighten the logic of a draft. Choosing a study spot based on habit or convenience instead of what you are actually trying to do that day is one of the more common reasons a study session stalls out.

Focus vs. Scenery

Be honest about what you need. If you are blocked, you need quiet (Strozier/Dirac). If you are bored, you need energy (Landis Green/Lake Ella coffee shops).

Quick Tip: The William Johnston Building is a hidden gem on campus—it's centrally located, has great power access, and is often less crowded than the main libraries.

How to Choose Your Spot

1. Noise Threshold
Know your limit. If you've reread the same paragraph twice, it's time to move.

2. Tool Check
Does the spot have stable Wi-Fi, power outlets, and a flat writing surface?

3. The "Backup" Plan
Always have a second spot in mind (like the Johnston Building) for when Strozier is full.

Secure Your Space

Both Strozier and Dirac libraries offer private rooms you can book up to 3 days in advance.
