Preventing Procrastination

Feeling Stuck?

Strategies to overcome writer's block and prevent procrastination.

It’s perfectly normal to feel stuck on an assignment, paper, or project. Whether you are facing a "blank page" or getting lost in the middle of a draft, these strategies will help you get back on track.

Phase 1: Getting Started

  • Don't Panic: It is okay to not know how to begin. Everyone experiences this.
  • Understand the Prompt: Ask yourself: Why did the instructor assign this? Who is my audience? What are the absolute rules?
  • Brainstorm: Write down every idea, then look for connections. Check out our brainstorming tips.
  • Don't Sweat the Small Stuff: Grammar and spelling are for later drafts. Just get the ideas down.
  • Trust Your Voice: Your ideas don't need to be like anyone else's.

"I'm Stuck in the Middle"

  • Skip the Intro: You don't need to write the first paragraph first. Jump to a section you do feel ready to write.
  • The 15-Minute Vent: Not interested in the topic? Write a 15-minute letter to yourself about why you don't want to write this. Then, write for 15 minutes about how to get unstuck.
  • Embrace Being "Wrong": You don't have to write the "right" thing in a first draft. You can always cut and revise later.

Managing Anxiety

Often, we are our own harshest critics. Try this:

The "I'm Good At" List: List what you do well. Example: "I have strong opinions," "I see connections," or "I explain things well to people."
  • Take a 10-Minute Break: Stepping away clears your mind.
  • Start Early: Tackling an assignment in small parts reduces the pressure to be perfect all at once.

Focus & Distractions

  • Go Offline: Turn off the internet or put your phone on "Do Not Disturb."
  • The Pomodoro Technique: Set a timer for 25 minutes of focused work, followed by a 5-minute break. This makes large projects feel manageable.
  • Prioritize: List assignments by deadline and time required. Don't expect to do it all at once.
